Bert van Erk Biographie

Né à Amsterdam en 1948, j’ai commencé mes études de guitare classique à l’âge de 12 ans, d’abord à l’école de musique, ensuite avec Carlo Mell. J’ai participé aux workshops de jazz de Theo Loevendie, mais en 1966 je suis entré au conservatoire pour étudier la guitare classique. Les cours de jazz et de ‘world music’ n’existaient pas au conservatoire.
Toutefois, j’ai continué de participer aux workshops : Neue Musik au Musikhochschule Köln, musique électronique à l’Institut Sonologie (Université Utrecht). J’ai joué dans les groupes de salsa, jazz et blues et dans les orchestres de théâtre, utilisant des guitares espagnoles, -électriques et -basses, parfois la percussion. De ’68 à ’70 j’étais membre de la Musica Elettronica Viva di Roma (MEV), avec Frederick Rzewski et Richard Teitelbaum. En même temps j’étais professeur de guitare classique.

En 1973 j’ai commencé à m’appliquer à la contrebasse avec Peter Scholc. Auparavant j’avais commencé à collaborer avec le saxophoniste Gijs Hendriks dans mon nouveau domicile Utrecht. Jusqu’en 1992 nous avons donné des concerts dans toute l’ Europe, participant à festivals de jazz, enregistrements de radio, télévision, film, et 12 LPs/CDs. Pendant ces années j’ai joué avec e.a. Slide Hampton, Boy Edgar Big Band, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, John Engels, Kenny Wheeler, Stan Tracey, Arthur Taylor, Beaver Harris, Wim Overgaauw, Joe Diorio, Marilyn Mead, Benny Bailey, Gerard Vogel et John Betsch.
De ’76 à ’85 j’ai contribué comme membre du bureau à l’Institution de Jazz et Musique Improvisée d’Utrecht (SJU) en
réalisant le SJU-jazzpodium. En coopération avec Gijs Hendriks j’ai donné beaucoup de workshops à e.a. Utrecht (SJU, Sfeerstation Bolingo), La Haye ( Jeunesse et musique), Eindhoven ( Jazzpower) et dans l’hôpital mental Saint Bavo à Noordwijkerhout.

Depuis 1993 j’habite à Groningen, où j’ai fondé le trio Marlon, Buma & Van Erk, et les groupes Bert’s Breeze et Afro Jazz Jam. Je suis membre de Out To Lunch, Les Bohèmes, Crincrin, Chocolate et Tegenwind.
Pendant ’93-’94 j'ai étudié à L’École de Carillon à Amersfoort. En ’97 ’98 j’ai séjourné quelques mois au Sénégal où j’ai joué avec e.a. Souleymane Faye, Africando et Abou Thiam & Ngaari Laaw.

Je compose et je fais des arrangements pour orchestres et projets. J’enseigne la contrebasse et la guitare basse, et je donne des workshops.

I was born in Amsterdam in 1948. From '60 I took guitarlessons at the Volksmuziekschool, later with Carlo Mell. I attended to jazz workshops of Theo Loevendie. From ' 66 up to ' 70 I studied "classical" guitar at the Conservatory of the Muzieklyceum. Education in jazz - or world music was not available at conservatories at the time. However I participated to different workshops: "New Music" at the Musikhochschule Koln, electronic music at Sonologie Utrecht. I explored as much as possible, with spanish -, electric - or bassguitar and sometimes percussion I played in jazz -, blues -, salsa - and theatre orchestras. From ' 68 up to ' 70 I participated in MEV (Musica Elettronica Viva di Roma), an international collective with o.a. Fredric Rzewski and Richard Teitelbaum that made three Europa-tournees annually. In the same years I was teacher in classical guitar at the musicschool in Amsterdam-Noord. In 73 I started to play the doublebass, I took private lessons with Peter Scholc. I had then already moved to Utrecht and started to cooperate with saxofonist Gijs Hendriks. Up to '92 we played with changing small and larger line-ups in Europe on concerts, festivals, radio & TV, movie-music and a dozen of LP-productions. I played in that period with o.a: Slide Hampton, Boy Edgar Big Band, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, John Engels, Kenny Wheeler, Stan Tracey, Arthur Taylor, Beaver Harris, Wim Overgaauw, Joe Diorio, Marilyn Mead, Benny Bailey, Gerard Vogel, John Betsch.
Between ' 76 and ' 85 I contributed as member of the board to the establishment of the SJU (Foundation for Jazz - and improvised music in Utrecht) and the realisation of the SJU-Jazzpodium.
I cooperation with Hendriks I realised many improvised music-workshops for o.a. the SJU, Youth and Music The Hague, St.Jazzpower and other partners. Later I gave workshops with a.o. Sfeerstation Bolingo Utrecht and Instituut Sint Bavo Noordwijkerhout.
In '93 I moved to Groningen. There I initiated the bands Marlon, Buma & Van Erk, Bert's Breeze and Afro Jazz Jam and took part in Out To lunch, Les Bohemes, Crincrin, Chocolate and Tegenwind. In 93-'94 I studied carillon at the Dutch carillon School Amersfoort. In ' 97 and ' 98 I was a couple of months in Senegal where I played with a.o.. Souleymane Faye, Africando and Abou Thiam & Ngaari Laaw.
I compose and arrange for orchestras and projects in which I'm involved, and on assignment. I teach doublebass and guitar and give workshops.

Ich bin in Amsterdam in 1948 geboren. Von '60 Gitarrestunden an das Volksmuziekschool, später bei Carlo Mell. Jazzwerkstätten von Theo Loevendie. Von ' 66 bis zu ' 70 Ich studierte ich "klassiche Gitarre" an das Konservatorium des Muzieklyceums in Amsterdam. Ich nahm teil an Werkstätten teil: "Neue Musik" zum Musikhochschule Koln, elektronische Musik bei Sonologie Utrecht. Mit Spanischen -, electrische - oder Baßgitarre und manchmal Perkussion spielte ich mit jazz -, blues -, salsa -, Philharmonie- und Theaterorchester. Von ' 68 bis zu ' 70 Mitglied von MEV (Musica Elettronica Viva Di Roma),ein internationales Kollektiv mit u.a. Fredric Rzewski und Richard Teitelbaum das jährlich dreimal auf Europa-Tournee war . In den gleichen Jahren war ich Dozent Gitarre zur MuziekSchule in Amsterdam-Nord. In 73 fing ich an Contrabass zu spielen, studierte bei Peter Scholc. Ich war dann bereits nach Utrecht umgewandert und angefangen mit de Saxofonisten Gijs Hendriks zusammen zu arbeiten. Bis 92 spielten wir mit kleinen und großeren bands in Europa Konzerte, Festivals, Radio, TV, Filmmusik und 12 LP/CD-Produktionen. Ich spielte in dieser Periode mit u.a: Slide Hampton, Boy Edgar Big Band, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, John Engels, Kenny Wheeler, Stan Tracey, Arthur Taylor, Beaver Harris, Wim Overgaauw, Joe Diorio, Marilyn Mead, Benny Bailey, Gerard Vogel, John Betsch.

Zwischen ' 76 und ' 85 trug ich als regelnbrettmitglied bei zur Einrichtung der SJU (Stichting Jazz- en geimproviseerde Muziek in Utrecht) und die verwirklichung des SJU-Jazzpodiums.I.z.m. Hendriks gab ich vielen Improwerkstätten für u.a. SJU, Jugend und Musik Den Haag, St. Jazzpower Eindhoven. Später gab ich Werkstätten fur u.a. Sfeerstation Bolingo Utrecht und Zwakzinnigeninstituut Sint Bavo Noordwijkerhout.In 93 verschob I nach Groningen und formierte das Trio Marlon, Buma & Van Erk, Bert's Breeze und AfroJazzJam. Ich bin mitglied von : Out To Lunch, Les Bohemes, Crincrin und Chocolate und Tegenwind.
In '93-'94 studierte ich Carillon zum Nederlandse Beiaardschool Amersfoort.
In '97 und ' in 98 Ich war fur einige Monate in Senegal, wo ich spielte mit u.a. Souleymane Faye, Africando und Abou Thiam &Ngaari Laaw.Ich komponiere und arrangiere Musik meistens fur Orchester und Projekte waran teilnehme.
Ich bin Privatdozent Contrabass und gebe Workshops.
